Ping Issues
Post by Heimerdinger »
Hi everyone
I'm Heimerdinger a reg on the THG server and I was wondering if anyone could help me.
Recently my ping on the server has been awful, normally my ping is about 20 - 60 but now i'm getting 200 - 600, I have checked my line and done ping tests but everything seems fine.
Also the awful ping seems to only be on THG servers all others seem fine. I was talking to Rev Joe_Pinball and he told me to do a Traceroute and post my results.
This is from my PC to THG 1 at about 8pm..

I have no idea what to do, should I contact my ISP about this or is it a issue with the server?
Thanks for any help you guys can give me

Doubt its the ISP
If you are having issues with THG servers then go on a HH server since they are on the same box. If you still have the same issue then it would be something to do with your connection to the box. In that case the pathing between your computer to the box is the issue. And the ISP can't do much about that

HH servers work fine its just the THG 1 and 2 servers that go awful.
Always seems to be around 8pm when it starts too...

Right lets actually go look at the data you provided

7 seems to be the problem, those are some big latency numbers.
Something wrong with that server with regards to your routing.
I think its the case of waiting until it sorts it self out or the routing changes
Edit: 1-6 the latency increases but within reason since it is going to the thg server that is located in France (I believe?)

Re: Ping Issues
Ill keep tabs on this and do a tracert my self later on this evening also if others could do the same! it would be good to have a few screenshots to compare,
we can open a ticket "with our host" which can help and makes things get fixed faster however it is a mission not just to create a ticket as HH / Frog still has permissions We / I don't have, creating tickets being 1 of them.
After 8pm go to command prompt and type This will show you all the hops/servers you go through with details on pings etc make a screenshot or highlight all and right click mouse /ctrl c. once you got it add it here ..
here is my tracert from just now...

Quick update here:
I have been playing on THG1 for the past few days and the issue appears to have been fixed, getting 20 ping again like I did before.
I put "ipconfig /flushdns" into command prompt a few times after a friend suggested it and that seemed to fix it.

Re: Ping Issues
Yeah this was always fine for me as i did look every evening, which 100% means it was a routing issue which we can't really do much about, other than wait it usually gets resolved at some point though.
Ahh yah that's a good idea
Good to hear your sorted

Unfortunately the issue appears to be back...
I have tried everything now and it looks like my only option is just to wait until they fix it for good or change my ISP .

I don't think changing ISP will help, but what is your ISP and product you are using?
Looks like 6 is behaving incorrectly, see if this keeps going for another few days.

Re: Ping Issues
That's pretty much the same issue I had, somewhere within A9 (I assume they're a carrier/upstream provider) I had a bad hop. I only seemed to spike from 7-8pm in the evenings.
Unfortunately there's very little you can do.
If you compare my routing to yours it's very similar but for some reason your traffic is routed out to Germany before being peered into France, whilst goes direct from the UK to France.
Tracing route to 87.98.254.85 over a maximum of 30 hops
1 3 ms 4 ms 6 ms bthub.home [192.168.1.254]
2 * * * Request timed out.
3 * * 10 ms 31.55.187.177

10 16 ms 15 ms 15 ms 87.98.254.85
You could try rebooting your route/modem at home, you may be assigned a new IP which could be routed differently, other than that it will go away by itself... eventually.

My ISP is BT (who have no idea what i'm talking about when I call them.) Not sure what you mean by product, do you mean my router?
I'll keep a eye on this and give a update in a few days.
