Windows 10
Probably some of you guys have noticed (or not) the windows icon in your bar down below.
I want to start the discussion about it;
Are you gonna download it?
What i can read about it, its 1 year free till its available at the market. Then you have to buy a licence for about 60 euro.
My personal opinion is a little bit in the middle of all it. They're really promoting W10 about how good it is and somehow i am excited about it.
But we know of experience (W Vista and W8 ) thats its maybe going to be a big flop.
What do you guys think?

MS never was clear abou this. The fact is, you have a year to upgrade for free. Hovewer it is not clear if you will keep the new system for free or of you'll be paying in the future for subscription (which would have effectively meant that you "upgraded" your full license of Win 8/7 to trial of Win 10)

Re: Windows 10
I've signed up as well. The new version is looking like a modern windows 7 which is a great stride forward from the Windows 8 nonsense :P
Even if you reserve your copy now it'll still prompt before installation. The reservation is just to initiate preloading of the OS when it goes live.

Re: Windows 10
This is how i understood it.
Win 10 license will be free for those who have windows 7 or 8. This last for a year. Meaning the ability to upgrade
After that point you need to buy the license. (Meaning people who haven't upgraded yet or have not had a win 7 or
The confusing part is what happens to the people who got the free upgrade.
I think it stays and you don't have to pay anything.

Re: Windows 10
Eh, I just upgrade when I get a new PC and it comes with the next one.
Re: Windows 10
Further clarification required but they've confirmed you can do a 'clean install' at any time. Don't know yet whether than means a format and reinstall or some sort of recovery.
From hereOnce you upgrade W10 w/ the free upgrade offer you will able to clean reinstall Windows 10 on same device any time
Re: Windows 10
I've seen some of the comments on that site. And they have a point about changes devices.DaV wrote: ↑Further clarification required but they've confirmed you can do a 'clean install' at any time. Don't know yet whether than means a format and reinstall or some sort of recovery.

If i want to upgrade to a better PC in the future, do i lose my license key or can still use it on my new device.
There are apparently some holes in this system of MS.

I hope this will do the trick then. I hope aswell i dont have to spend a fortune on W10 if i buy a new PC.

Re: Windows 10
I will on my laptop first, what have seen is a good step back for them with i hope a big stride forwarded, but i have no trust in ms so i wont be moving forward without testing.what i have works at the moment so i don't like to break it like when i think back 2000,vista,ms8

They are throwing everything on W10. Even the illegal versions of W7/Win8 (*ahum*) can upgrade for free.
I hope they can keep the promises.
I wonder what will happen with my games aswell, if it keeps fully functional and all that.

Re: Windows 10
To be honest I'll be upgrading mainly for DX12 at some point, until then I might try it just in virtual pc....

True but the system will be still marked as pirated, it won't make it legal all of a sudden

Like me, I've run a snide version of Win7 since day 1 and have the option of an upgrade to Win10.
From what I understand once upgraded I will still have a non genuine Windows and some where down the line MS will try and extract a license fee somehow.
This free upgrade concept would never have seen the light of day under Balmer. It's quite telling the way that MS are repositioning themselves just how out of touch he was.
It's even the little things, like in Win10 you can c+p with ctrl-c/ctrlv in a cmd prompt, there's no technical reason why this shouldn't have been in place in Win95. Hell they are even adding SSH into Powershell.
But I do fear the ship is sailing away for Linux gaming. The one great hope SteamOS should have been released just after the mess that was Win8, it had a real chance of gaining some traction but Valve time took over and the opportunity was lost.

Re: Windows 10
I think I'll only be upgrading when I want/need full DX12 support and certainly not until other people have tested it and all the bugs are worked out.
I'd prefer to do the line of keeping my current install and dual booting like I did with migration from XP to win7.
However I only own one full win7 license so I'd need to buy another Win10 license to do that, or any other cheap license which would get a free upgrade.
I look forward to others telling me how good it is after a few weeks usage.

Presumably it will be like windows 7 to windows 8 was - some programs will work fine, some programs will work (but with problems) and some programs just won't work until it's re-installed.
