It's worth it, but I... Used to love minecraft 20x more when it was on Beta/Alpha. All the green grass and all the epic stuff
For peaceful:
Esc -> Click Twice where it says: Difficulty: Normal
How old is your kid? If he's still a bit young you should defo put it as peaceful, but if he's like 10 or something, maybe he'll actually like the monsters

Re: Minecraft 1.8
imo it would be even worth a full video game price of 40€. there is a reason i stopped playing tf2 and went to minecraft
it is really good for my nerves, cause you dont get frustrated in minecraft ever.
i'd recommend an age of 6+ if you accompany your kid. minecraft is really the most peaceful and useful thing a kid can do on a pc nowadays.

16-20 is the norm, I run one off my box for me and a few mates, just an old i7 with 6gb of RAM and the thing never lags even with 100's of nukes detonating all over the place (only did that a few times to test it, honest) so server overheads should be dirt cheap if having one hosted.

yeah you're gonna need bukkit or an equivalent on the server, you really don't want people spawning lava, tnt, flint +steel, bedrock, obsidian etc etc all over the place, griefing in minecraft can be pretty severe when a wooden house you spent days building is destroyed. even accidents happen always good to limited the possibility of something going very wrong. Luckily there are tons of mods for minecraft, just limit the blocks people can spawn and craft and new members have no build privilages until and OP lets them and it should run fairly smoothly.
(there are ways round to grief that need to be addressed too, like you may not be able to spawn lava or lava buckets but you can still craft an empty bucket and fill it with lava, plus the crafting recipe for tnt is stupidly cheap so you have to remember all angles when setting the server up)

it sure is worth £17 my LP on youtube does mods that make the game even better, if ur kid like lego and stuff like that hell love it
as for a server that would be awesome,
bukkit it useful for anti griefing but the best was is to password the server to THG members only (or WhiteList) so we all respect eachother and if there are any griefers they get banned
man this is an old thread 1.8 there out of beta now and on working on 1.3! (1.2.5 is out right now)

I agree. Alpha for me was BEAUTIFUL. Minecraft in its current version is full of things that I consider "non-minecraft" (such as enchantments, useless biomes like swamps, etc). Plus, the beautiful green grass that minecraft had was also amazing.
