|
|
Hey folks,
I've stumbled on another Steam account phishing site, you may remember the group announcement a while back about the last one. This one looks to be a little old dating back to 2006, but is still merrily stealing accounts with alarming efficiency. BEWARE!
The site is located at http://gamesfromsteam.ga.ohost.de/ and is so lame they don't even deserve the courtesy of a functioning link.
If a friend has their account hijacked, they'll sign in one last time to send an automated message to everyone they know. You'lll see something like this:
Quote: | Never tell your password to anyone.
11 October 2008
18:20: http://gamesfromsteam.ga.ohost.de/
N********** is now Offline. |
There are some big clues that the site is a fake:
- There are some terrible spelling/grammar errors in the english translation.
- There are HTML code errors (broken HTML tags poking into the main text)
- It offers every Steam game ever for free - this is the fishbait, and a big clue
- It's located at www.ohost.de, a free personal webspace provider.
- It asks for your email address, username and password all at once.
https://steamcommunity.com/ is the official Valve site and only website you should ever use with your Steam password. It's similar to the "Community" tab of the main Steam interface and allows you to update or view your profile from a web browser. Note the "https" secure connection.
Again, NEVER GIVE AWAY YOUR STEAM ACCOUNT PASSWORD! Since this phishing scam was automated, the victim didn't even have a chance to use the account password reset because the registered email address was changed as soon as the account was compromised.
Valve customer support are usually good enough to help out if you are in trouble. If you're unlucky enough to lose your account, these pages might be useful:

Remember... if it looks like it's too good to be true and you're being pressured into making a fast decision, there's a good chance a big mean Mother Hubbard is about to tear you a structurally superfluous new behind.
Cheers all,
Tom |

And in that case just use a gun, and if that don't work, use more gun.
I don't know where do you get all this stuff but thanks a lot for the tips, always nice to see these scams exposed. |

Shucks tomfin, youbrokethesecondlinktoo
By the way, has anyone informed ohost ( ) about this? Could be useful - sure, it wouldn't get rid of the scam, but if taking down that one site can stop just one account getting hijakced, then it's worth it. My German is terrible, unfortunately otherwise I'd send of an email to them. |
