My computer has decided to play up. I get a screen of purplish dots on boot followed by blue screen of doom. I tried system restore but  no joy. Safe mode works but Nvidia control panel cant find my card and it doesnt appear in devices.

In safe mode, when I force it to look for a VGU it finds my cards installs the driver. The comp restarts (with purple dots) but before getting to normal mode i get the blue screen again. I can reboot in safe mode, but then the VGU is gone again.

I tried a fresh install of windows7, same issues of purple dots. whats more i cant start in normal mode to finish the windows installation because of the bluw screen!

Pretty convinced my VGU died..... Nvidia 8800GT dual 256Mb... a dinasour! I tried cleaning it and checking connections. The fans on both cards are working but one of the cards gets very hot compared to the other. Tried booting the comp with one of the cards but no joy.

Already bought a EVGA 450 GT 1Gb to replace it....... So I am really hoping its the graphics card and not a more serious issue.

Anyone concur with my thoughts about my issue being with the VGU?

And have I chosen a good card? I considered the similar Palit version but the customer services on EVGA look better.... They were both priced similar at £100 + delivery.

I also considered the 460 but I dont know if my comp can handle it... or even if it is worth it considering I was fine with my dual-8800GT. (my comp has 2 6pin power slots and space for a dual card)

Be brave and shoot rockets so that kLoWn may love thee

I also had the same problem with my old comp. Had the same series graphics card which turned out to have died.

Good choice with the card. The perfect balance of price and performance.

Best of Luck.

yeah that sounds like a dead GPU alright, once you get your new card in it should be fine.
