Hey, let's have a Witcher thread.

Anybody playing it?

I am completely blown away by how massive this game is myself.

If you like great storytelling in a rather mature fairy tail-like world with decent gameplay then give it a shot :P

Playing the previous games isn't necessary imo but they do give a massive bonus to the overall setting because all those critical choices carry over and you'll perhaps understand better on what's going in the world.

I'm looking forward to playing it, but haven't taken the plunge yet... It was priced at a point beyond what I was prepared to pay, even for a new release, and I have too many games in my backlog  Wink

I really enjoyed what I played of The Witcher 1 and 2 but got distracted by other games or real life (as tends to happen with me). How are you liking it compared to the second game, Winthof?

Improvement on every aspect. Second game got too political, even though it was visually very unique and fairy tale-like. And it was short, it could've easily been a sidequest to Witcher 3 in terms of it's gametime Smile or in better words - Witcher 2 basically feels like an introduction to Witcher 3 rather than a separate game.

I am 30 hours in and I can't stop playing it. And there's still no end in sight.

Hype Hype Hype I am so hyped. But I'm replaying first and second game for now and give TW3 more time so the game could be properly patched and polished Smile.
Also one review that really got my attention, especially compared to this whole Ocean of high notes for the game:

[Watch On YouTube]

His reviews are rather fun to watch, I love how he gets frustrated and sarcastic (even if he doesn't give a damn if he'll offend someone).
While he obviously angered a whole pool of fanboys, I think he does have some very fair points. Smile
(There's a follow up video to this one on his channel if you're interested)

Have to admit, Amelia, those videos were frustrating as hell to watch even though he seems like a fun guy  Sad

His criticism seems to be based more on his disliking to the hype around the game rather than the actual game itself. Granted, the combat is no Dark Souls but as the game progresses, preparing for fights and planning your attacks becomes more and more important. If I were to say to this guy anything, I'd say: "Sure, go agead, roll + attack yourself through the game if you want to spend 10 minutes on a single fight later on." And having longer fights means more mistakes and mistakes lead to death. There will be more parrying enemies, more flying enemies and more special kind of enemies (with high regen for example). The combat eventually comes down to finding out the most effective and quickest way of bringing down foes which means using all the basic witcher abilities and knowledge from reading beastiaries to managing your stamina in a fight for Signs.

Kind of agree on the movement controls, those can be a bit annoying sometimes even with a controller (especially on a horse, but for some reason the video guy liked the horse controls while I'm constantly clipping through trees and running into walls with my horse).

I kind of doubt the game will be 100% bug free but so far I've only had minor bugs and nothing gamebreaking.

No idea how people get something like this though Very Happy

No game will ever be bug free.
That's just silly.

There will be bugs during testing that can't be done again no matter how many times the discoverer tries.
There are bugs within that can't be fixed without completely re-writing the entire game code.
There are bugs that just simply won't be found until after release even longer, all because of poor luck with trying to find them. Remember, testers can just stumble upon bugs by chance.
Even if it's not by chance and a tester is trying to do things that shouldn't be possible, there might be things to try that the tester(s) doesn't think of doing.

There will never be a perfect bug-free game, it's just not possible.
Especially as games become more and more complicated, both graphically and script-wise.
